Chisel 3D Creation Tempts Taste Buds in Times Square

Atlanta, GA, August 10, 2010 – Chisel 3D sculptors and craftspeople are accustomed to building large-scale characters, life-sized dinosaurs and 3D signs for themed environments across the country. But creating a giant bowl filled with oversized Kellogg’s® Pop-Tarts®, fruit, ice cream and chocolate was a special treat.

Chisel 3D built the eight-foot bowl full of goodies to be displayed in Pop-Tarts World, a shop and café in New York’s Times Square. It sits atop the “Varietizer,” a Pop-Tarts dispenser that allows consumers to customize boxes of Pop-Tarts with their favorite flavors. The environment also features Pop-Tarts T-shirts and other merchandise for sale. Chisel 3D worked with Robbins Tesar Inc., who partnered with Gigunda Group Inc., who conceived and designed the project. Robbins Tesar Inc. fabricated many of the structural elements in the Pop-Tarts World space.

“This was really a fun project,” says Chisel 3D president Gary Bystrom. “The design was great and a perfect application for our three-dimensional process. You just can’t get that large-scale realism any other way.”

Bystrom and his crew started with a two-dimensional drawing of the piece and converted it into three-dimensional elements using a combination of computer-controlled equipment and hand sculpting. “The Pop-Tarts were two feet by three feet and the strawberries were as big as basketballs,” according to Bystrom. “With everything being so big, the details were really important. We love doing high-quality, high-detail work like this and we’re excited to be part of the project.”
